February Glossybox

February Glossybox

After last months rather disappointing Glossybox (blog post on it here)I was intrigued to see if they would up their game this month, especially considering all subscribers received a survey email asking how they could improve Glossybox since so many people were disappointed. To me beauty boxes should introduce you to brands you haven’t heard of and give you samples of high end products you wouldn’t buy without trying first.

The products

Nougat London - Sparkling Body Shimmer
A decent size sample, not sure I'll use it though. It's a shimmer body lotion, one of those that add a slight sparkle to the skin. It'd be good for summer on bronzed skin.

Eldora Eyelashes- Full Size
I don’t really get to wear eyelashes much, so these may have to go side ways to someone who will appreciate these a bit more. They look really full and fluttery!

Ciate London - Paint Pot - Full Size
I got the shade Pocket Money, which is a nude shade. I love the packaging - so cute!

Giovanni Eco Chic cosmetics ultra moist shampoo/conditioner/hair mask
Little sachets of shampoo, conditioner and a deep hair mask. They're meant to be moisturising but I think I'm going to save these for when I a little mini break.

Maybelline New York - Big Eyes Mascara - Full Size
I love a mascara and Maybelline makes my favourite one - Falsies mascara, so I’m looking forward to testing this out! Unlike most mascaras it has two brushes; one for top lashes and one for bottom.

Lindt - Lindor Treat Bar
I love chocolate so this was a very welcome edition to this months box! I just wish it was bigger :P.

February Glossybox

Overall they’ve definitely tried this month, the box felt and looked full for once and featured 3 full size products! From Glossybox taster emails I knew that we would all be receiving a Ciate London Paint Pot nail varnish, I don’t actually have any Ciate polishes as they’re a bit to pricey for me to normally buy (£9 a go), so I loved the fact that I’ve managed to get my hands on one! Thank you Glossybox!

Lets hope next months is better still! Although then I will have the issue of having to chose which subscription to cancel, as I don’t think I can justify having two beauty boxes a month. The Glossybox vs. Birchbox battle continues...

Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm/Lacquer Balm + Swatches

Revlon ColorBurst Balm

Okay so I may have caved in and bought some Revlon Colorburst balms! BUT in my justification I NEEDED them in my life and they were 3 for 2 in Boots, so I could hardly resist now could I? Besides it would have been rude not to! Choosing just three was the harder task, not only do you have to choose from 20 shades but then you have to decide whether to go for matt or lacquer! Too many choices! Poor boyfriend stood in Boots waiting for me to stop being so fussy and indecisive with my make up choices...

Revlon ColorBurst BalmRevlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm

After filling the back of my hands with God knows how many swatches, I finally decided that unapologeticDemure and vivacious would be the Revlon balms for me (well as start of my collection anyway!)

The balms come in a big chunky pen style packaging, which features a screw up bottom - so no need to sharpen.

All of the balms boast a triple butter complex - shea, mango and coconut butter. Meaning unlike some stains/balms they are moisturising and I haven't found them drying at all - not even the matt ones. The  formulation is super creamy but still feels light on the lips. Colour pay off is great considering how light these feel on the lips, these bad boys are super pigmented and wear off well into a nice stain - rather than settling into the lines in your lips. They also smell minty, which isn't too overpowering - I like it.

Unapologetic Matte Balm
Unapologetic was the only Matt balm I went for in the end, it's a gorgeous bright redish pink shade that will be perfect for summer! It not 100% matt as some lipsticks can be, but I think it's due to the moisturising ingredients in it- so it's not a bad thing. The formula of the matt balms are slightly different to the lacquers and I'd recommend exfoliating your lips for a perfect finished look, as it will stick to dry skin more and look patchy. This also fades to a nice stain and lasts on your lips for hours.

Demure Lacquer Balm
Demure is a nude/light pink colour with a subtle shimmer/sparkle (not in a bad look at my lips they're so sparkly kind of way) The lacquers have a high shine glossy finish without the stickiness of a gloss.

Vivacious Lacquer Balm
Vivacious is a dark pinky red shade which looks lovely on!

Overall I love the Revlon Colorburst Balms, they are creamy, non drying and very pigmented! Only problem is I want more now!

Have you bought any yet? Let me know what you think

February Birchbox | VeryJenny

It's that time of month when beauty boxes land on my doorstep and Birchbox got there first! I've been really impressed with February's Birchbox offerings, all items are new to me (apart from the chocolate, of course I've had that before!!) and they're a nice variety of product kinds. I like a mix of make up/hair care/body care in my boxes!

The outside box remains the same but the inside is different this months compared to last. The first thing you will notice is that there is no magazine this month instead you have five double sided cards with tutorials and tips on them- I think I actually prefer this to the magazine. I don't normally properly read the booklets but with the little cards I actually read each one! I love the design style! Birchbox you've done well!

The drawstring bags are also back! They disappeared last month and the items were just rolling around on their own in there! Now they've got the drawstring back to contain them, plus I like using this for storing little things especially when travelling as they squish into tiny spaces and stop make up spilling everywhere onto other items.

Front of cards
Back of cards
As I said before I LOVE these cards over the magazines, so quick an easy to read! I love the little belly wrap that holds them all together.

Onto the products!

First up is the Eyeko Skinny Liquid liner mini size (full size £12)
I knew we would be seeing this product in this months birchbox and I was so excited about trying it out! I love eyeliners! Always have always will! An eye flick is my go to look and can instantly draw attention to your eyes.

This sample is a mini size of the Eyekos full size liner and is perfectly sized for small handbags! It's a super black black pen applicator eyeliner with firm pointed nib. I love black black eyeliners, it annoys me when I buy an eyeliner and they look black but then once applied to your eyelids they end up a kinda washy black more of a grey colour. This is definitely BLACK BLACK! I can't comment on wear time yet, as I've not fully tested it out yet. Will let you know once I have!

Beauty Protector Protect & oil (sample size, full size is £16)
This product is an exclusive launch to Birchbox which is quite exciting! Is nice to think we get to try something out first before anyone else does! It's basically an oil for your hair that protects from UV, heat and breakage. You can apply it to damp hair before styling, or use it on dry hair for some nourishment for dry ends.

Gilchrist & Soames The london collection shower gel (sample size, full size is £13.75)
Even though I love beauty I love shower gels and shampoo and condition samples as they are perfect for weekends away or holidays. I always know I'll end up using them. This shower gel has a paraben free formulation made up of red tea, grape seed and milk thistle.

It might just be me BUT this shower gel smells like a nice clean man! Okay that sounds crazy lol, its lovely and fresh and apparently reminds me of a nice smelling clean man...

Leighton Denny Nail colour (full size £11)
I don't own any nail polishes by leighton Denny so I'm excited to try this one. I've seen quite a few shades in other peoples Birchboxes so looks like there is a good selection around! I received a black and silver chunky glitter top coat, I just know this will look great over a bright coloured nail!

Urbanveda Radiance Exfoliating Facial Polish (sample size, full size is £8.99)
Yet another brand I've not heard of! Which is great! That's the main reason I get beauty boxes- to try new things! I don't really use exfoliaters on my face but I'll give this one a try. It's a gentle exfoliator that has superfruits to make you look radiant and youthful (apparently), it recommends being used 2-3 times a week. I'll let you know how I find this!

Green and Blacks Dark 70% Chocolate (sample size - about two bites, full size is £2.99)
Okay I've heard of these; and may have eaten some of their chocolate in the past... Is it bad that chocolate 'lifestlye extras' are my favourite kind of extra :P

February Birchbox

Overall I am very happy with February's Birchbox, I can safely say I'll be trying all these out over the next few days. The chocolate has already been tested out and it was yummy!

What did you get in this month's box? Are you impressed?

Valentines day nails

Okay so I am definitely not the best nail painter in the world but I still like to try and make my nails look kinda nice!

Anyways, I decided to do a quick and simple valentines day nail and wanted to share it with you. I painted most of my nails in models own hypergel in shade pink veneer, apart from my ring finger which I have painted white using rimmels nail tip whitner (I don't have a normal white nail varnish). I then made a heart on the white nail in the pink polish to give a valentines day hint without looking ott! Drawing a heart is easier than it looks-I used my dotter tool to make two big dots of polish and then dragged them down to a point.

Hope you like it!

Maybelline instant Anti Age "The Eraser" eye concealer

Since starting work I’ve noticed a change in my eyes; I look more tired. I miss the days as a student when I could lay in till 9/10 after a late night, now I am renounced to having an actually body clock and trying to becoming a morning person (something I definitely am not!). As a consequences of the early mornings I now am prone to dark circles under my eyes, so I've been on the lookout for a make up solution to cover these up! I know I could just get some more sleep and it would probably help but I struggle to fall asleep before 11 and annoyingly whenever I know I have to be up early I somehow wake up long before my alarm! Silly body! So a make up solution will have to do for now!

Maybelline instant Anti Age "The Eraser" eye concealer light

The Maybelline instant Anti Age "The Eraser" eye concealer is a product I have heard lots about on the Internet, especially in America as they got it long before it worked it's way over to the UK. It's basically a concealer designed specifically to brighten and conceal your under eyes to cover up dark circles and help with the puffiness that seems to come hand in hand with being tired! I actually struggled to find this product in the UK for a few months, then it popped up in one of my local Boots, so I had to buy it.

Maybelline instant Anti Age "The Eraser" eye concealer light

I like the packaging of this, it's very compact and the clear click on top will stop it making a mess in your make up bag. On my first use it took me a while to actually get the product up to the sponge top, I thought I'd picked up a dud one! But no, after maybe 40 clicks it was up! (may be an exaggeration, I didn't count!). I love the fact that you control the amount of product to use with clicks, it definitely prevents wastage as one click will do.

I know many germ-a-phobes won't like the applicator as you have no way of cleaning it, but I think as long as your face is clean every time you use it you should be okay. In fact I'm sure I read somewhere that it's made from an anti bacterial sponge material - don't hold me on that though!

You apply the product straight out of the applicator- I tend to dab it on rather than use a sweeping motion as I don't like dragging eye skin around too much. I then use my ring finger to dab and blend it in- on a side note it's good to use your ring finger when blending things on your eyes as it's the one that you can't apply a lot of pressure using.

Unblended swatch

The eraser eye concealer only comes in two shades in the UK; light and nude. I purchased light as I'm quite fair skinned and I wanted a brightening effect. The consistency is very light and blends effortlessly. Coverage is very good considering how light this product feels on the skin and I don't find it to be greasy.

I personally love this concealer, it definitely helps to make me look more awake and it covers my dark under eyes perfectly. It lasts quite a few hours without settling in creases or fine lines.

You can pick up Maybelline’s ‘The Eraser’ Perfect & Cover concealer in Boots and Superdrug, although I think it’s a little hard to find at the moment as I'd been keeping an eye out for it for a while before I stumbled across one! It's priced at £7.99.

Real Techniques Core Collection

Real Techniques Core Collection

Today I thought I'd do a review of the Real Techniques Core Collection brush set for you guys. I received these as a Christmas present from my parents along with the starter set; they are designed by make up artists Sam and Nic Chapman although you may know them as pixiwoo through their youtube videos. You get four face brushes in the set that all fit neatly within their case. The set helps to create a flawless, high definition finish that will look great in any light even including harsh indoor lighting. The core collection covers all bases (literally) from powders, creams liquids to mineral makeup, highlighter, and shimmer.

Real Techniques Core Collection

After using this brush set for just over a month, I am in love! Seriously! Not only are they reasonably priced in comparison to brands such as Mac, but the quality is amazing! The bristles are super soft and pick up/blend products so effortlessly, plus they are made from a synthetic fibre called taklon meaning they are 100% cruelty free! PLUS PLUS! The brush handles are light weight aluminium, they feel very nice to hold and feel like good quality.

Brushes are colour coded depending on their designed use; gold yellow for base, purple for eyes and pink for setting. Although don’t let this restrict you, they are so versatile that they can often be used for other thing than what their name suggests. Take the buffing brush for example, on the box it says it’s ideal for powder or mineral foundation but I love love love using this for liquid foundation.

Detailer Brush

This precision cut brush is great for use with concealer! It allows you to gently conceal dark circles under the eyes without harshly rubbing the delicate eye area, it’s better to gently tab the concealer and build up coverage. You could also use this as a lip brush to make your lipstick last longer.

Pointed Foundation Brush

This brush is designed for use with liquid foundation, it’s ideal to build coverage up and gives you a lot of control. The pointed tip is great for reaching areas like around the nostrils, helping you to achieve a flawless look. I also sometimes use it for my concealer.

Buffing Brush

My favourite out of the bunch! It’s ideal for full coverage application of powder and mineral foundation but I personally love this for liquid foundation. I buff it in using circular motions working outwards and it really gives you a flawless natural coverage that lasts a lot longer than it would if you apply it with your fingers. I also find it saves on product as the brush helps to make a little to go a long way!

Real Techniques buffing brush

Contour Brush

Contouring is very useful when adding dimension to your face, it can enhance your jaw line, slim your cheeks, narrow a nose, slim a forehead, the list is endless! Before I owned this I was doing the trick of squashing a blusher brush with my contour powder, which although it works is not ideal. This brush picks up just the right amount of product and allows you to blend effortlessly - so no harsh brown stripes! You can also use this for highlighting for a sheer soft focus kind of look.

Real Techniques contour brush

Panoramic Brush Case

All the brushes are contained within a black case, although the bigger brushes will stand up on their own. The case Velcros shut making it ideal for travelling with as the brushes are well protected. The case can also act as a stand, you pull the cord and move the little bobble device down and voilĂ , one make up brush stand! Great if you want to be able to see all your brushes on the side.

Real Techniques Core Collection

I’d definitely recommend getting these! You won’t regret it! You can pick these up in Boots for £21.99. Think I might try out their beauty blender next or the expert face brush.

Have you tried any of the Real Technique brushes?

Simple and healthy Banana and strawberry smoothie

I made a lovely smoothie at the weekend and I wanted to share the smoothie yumminess with you guys :). It's really quick and easy, you only need a few ingredients. And the best part of all, it is yummy AND good for you! You could have this smoothie as a quick breakfast or a snack in the day.

What you'll need

  • 1/2 cup low fat natural yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of strawberries, sliced
  • 1 Banana
  • 6 Ice cubes (if using fresh fruit, if using frozen you won't need these)
  • A dash of milk for texture preference

I've used fresh fruit for my smoothie but you could use frozen ones instead, you won't need to add ice if you do though. You could also substitute the natural yoghurt for greek yoghurt if you don't like the taste of natural.

I got my cup measures from Asda for maybe £3 a few months ago, so not sure if they still do the colourful one. I love cup measures, it makes it super easy to get the right amount of each ingredient. Ideal if you're in a rush to get a quick breakfast or snack done.

Shove all the ingredients into your blender or smoothie maker, and blend. It's as simple as that!

The recipe makes enough for one large-ish portion so double it if you're making for two. I love this smoothie personally, its so tasty and healthy for you!

If anyone has any good smoothie recipes I'd love to try them!
