I've been road testing a protein powder for the last couple of weeks, I'm pretty new to whey powders so when Monkey nutrition asked if I'd like to try something from their range I jumped at the opportunity.  They do a large range of supplements and fitness aids but I decided to try Primal 26 which is a Whey Protein Isolate. My understanding of protein powders (correct me if I'm wrong though) is that they they help with muscle repair after a workout. I've also read that they can help to raise your resting metabolism and helps with fat burn. So I figured it couldn't hurt to add this to my pre or post workout routine.

Primal26 comes in three flavours: chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Being a chocolate lover it was a no brainer, plus I figured by picking chocolate I could use it as both a shake and in smoothies (as my favourite is a chocolate, banana and peanut butter smoothie!) as well as using it for baking. Packets come in three different sizes : 420g (14 servings), 840g (28 servings) and 2270g (75 servings). I'd personally go for the smaller sizes as then if I don’t like a flavour or fancy a change I’m not wasting any product.

What's in it?  I'm no dietician but nutritional wise I think this protein is very clean. It's fat free, sugar free, cholesterol free and gluten free! Primal26 is sweetened with Stevia, which is a natural plant leaf extract which doesn't have negative effects on blood glucose levels and contains virtually no calories! It's got 26 grams of protein helping to give you lean results with only 1 gram of carbohydrates. Meaning its a great multi use powder to aid muscle growth and repair, fat loss.

The whey powder comes in a plastic pouch with a resealable top with a scoop measure inside to ensure you use the right amount of product each time. The packaging itself is predominately black with their monkey logo large in the middle, to me it seems very masculine.

Mixing and taste

With the whey protein I also received one of Monkey Nutritions shakers. I really like it! It's massive so perfect for putting generous sized smoothies in and the large opening allows for easy drinking (especially when I make them really thick!). Luckily it has an oval opening so you don't end up with a smoothie moustache!

Most protein shakers use a metal or plastic wired ball to ensure it mixes up, which according to the boyfriend can take ages, but this one has a plastic spiral. It mixed the protein up so quickly and when you shake it creates a mini spiral in the liquid to speed up the process - so clever!

I know a lot of people mix protein with just water but too me it was just too thin and watery and I didn't like it very much. Milk was the best option for drinking it as just a protein shake, as it was thicker and felt more like a milk shake consistency and it tasted of very sweet chocolate. The mix was smooth and didn't taste too powdery, which is something a lot of powders do. I also tested it with almond milk but it ended up tasting a bit strange, so I wouldn't recommend that!

I prefer this mixed into a smoothie with lots of greek yoghurt and bananas mixed in. I also experimented with using it in a pancake recipe for a healthier breakfast option.

If you're looking for a high quality whey protein Isolate, that aupports rapid muscle growth, rapid muscle absorption. Has an abundant source of BCAAs and essential amino acids. Is fat free, sugar free, cholesterol free and gluten free Primal26 could be a good place to start.

If you want to try it you can get it from Monkey Nutrition for £17.95
